📰 Responsible Use of Social Media: A Call to Zambians

By Arnold Tutu, Journalist

In today’s digital age, social media has become a powerful tool for communication, information-sharing, and even economic growth. Platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok have brought people together across towns, provinces, and continents. However, with great power comes great responsibility.

As Zambians, we must use social media wisely—not to destroy, mislead, or harm—but to build, educate, and uplift.

One worrying trend is the rapid spread of misinformation. Fake news, doctored images, and conspiracy theories can easily go viral, misleading thousands. Before sharing anything, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it respectful? Let us verify sources and think critically.

Social media has also become a breeding ground for cyberbullying, hate speech, and character assassination. Let’s remember that behind every profile is a real person. We must promote kindness, tolerance, and constructive dialogue even when we disagree.

Another concern is addiction and overuse, especially among youths. Spending too much time online can affect mental health, productivity, and relationships. Balance is key.

Finally, be cautious about what personal information you share. Online scams and identity theft are on the rise.

Let’s make social media a tool for unity, not division. As citizens of a growing digital Zambia, we each have a role to play.

Post with purpose. Share with care.
