Stakeholders in Eastern Province have called for amendments to the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Act to better address challenges faced by survivors.

Eastern Province Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) Coordinator Dorothy Njobvu said there is need to harmonize various statutes with the GBV Act to improve its effectiveness. She added that a dedicated budget line should be established to support survivors accommodated in safe shelters.

Mrs. Njobvu made the remarks on the sidelines of a stakeholder engagement meeting on the review of the Anti-GBV Act.

Chisomo Community Programme Director Annie Chiseni noted that the review process will help strengthen care and support systems for survivors.

Meanwhile, Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Paul Thole, in remarks delivered on his behalf by Provincial Assistant Secretary Clement Chilembo, said emerging issues have exposed gaps in the current law.
